St. Mary Academy is a close knit community of students and teachers in which religious values and classes are taught with a high expectation for good behavior. Located in Dover NH, St. Mary Academy was founded in 1912 as a regional elementary school, operated under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester. Students obtain a firm grasp of the beliefs of the Catholic Church as well as the importance of Catholic social teachings and service.
St. Mary Academy strives to be a community of peace, justice and love, modeled on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as a Catholic Christian School. The school emphasizes a program in faith development, personal responsibility, mutual respect, academic achievement, and service to others. Each student develops his or her own potential while appreciating and supporting the uniqueness of others.
In 1883, Catholic education in Dover began. The Sisters of Mercy opened the Sacred Heart School of girls and Saint Joseph School for boys, and through the ensuing century, the school's name has changed, other schools have begun, and merged together. The school was rededicated to Mary, the Mother of God, in 1989, and later renamed to Saint Mary Academy. The Kindergarten and Pre-K programs were moved to a newly renovated building on the corner of Locust Street and Church Street in 1999.
Saint Mary Academy serves approximately 400 students, most of which live in Dover NH, Barrington, Rochester, Rollinsford, Somersworth, and Southern Maine. The goals set forth in 1883 remain a priority of the school today as a Catholic faith community. Saint Mary Academy strives to provide an environment in which students can prepare themselves for what the future holds. A partnership between students, parents, faculty, and staff guarantees the success of this future.
