Senator Hillary Clinton of New York visited Dover NH on February 17th, 2007 to speak to voters in the Primary State about the upcoming Presidential elections and where she stands on the issues. The meeting was rescheduled to 10AM due to a last minute change of a Senate schedule to vote on a nonbinding resolution opposing the escalation of troops in Iraq by 21,500. The town-hall style meeting called “Conversation with Granite Staters” was held in the Dover High School Cafeteria at 25 Alumni Drive. She spoke about Iraq, Iran, health care, mental health care, and global warming. The crowd was filled with 1200 liberals and Democrats from the New Hampshire area.
Hillary Clinton said “If Bush does not end this war by the time he leaves office – when I’m president, I will.” She downplayed the signifigance of being elected the first woman president to emphasize she believes she is the most qualified person for the job. She denounced the cowboy politics in Washington to underline that she will reach out to the rest of the world to reclaim America’s respect. She seized the moment to promise affordable quality healthcare for every American, eliminate dependence on foreign oil, improve education, and decrease the number of troops in Iraq.
Hillary Clinton also denounced military action against Iran, stating “It would be a mistake of historic proportions if the president took action”. She reminded the crowd of her husband’s campaign in 1992 in the very location she spoke, when he said “If you’ll stick with me, I’ll stick with you until the last dog dies.” When she heard the Senate vote would conflict with Dover, she said “Cancel Dover? Has the last dog died?”. After telling the crowd this heart touching story about how she rescued the campaign stop, she told the crowd “Of course, the last dog has not died”.
