On behalf of the Ready to Learn Task Force and Dover Reads, I invite you to be among a select group of local artists to participate in our “Reading Chair” project. Early literacy is of major importance to the Dover School District, and we have come up an innovative project to promote reading and benefit our youngest and most deserving population.
Our idea is to involve Dover High School’s Career Technical students, along with industrial art students at Dover Middle School to create small, wooden reading chairs. These chairs will then be hand decorated by art students at Dover High School and given to young children at My Friend’s Place, The HUB Family Resource Center, the Dover Special Education Preschool and Head Start. We are also asking area artists to come on board and create a one-of-a-kind chair to be auctioned off in Spring 2008, with proceeds to go toward the project’s sustainability.
You have been suggested as an artist who might consider being a part of our unique project! If you choose to participate, you will be given a small, child’s wooden chair to paint in a manner that would be distinctly your own. Chairs will be available in January, and would need to be completed by March to be displayed in downtown Dover merchant windows. Working in conjunction with Dover Police Families, who will supply books to accompany each chair, we will auction off these unique artists’ chairs sometime in May 2008.
Participation in such a highly visible community project will showcase your art; but most importantly, your participation will help to promote early literacy in Dover and greatly enhance our project. Please consider donating your time and talent to this worthwhile community effort.
The enclosed application to participate in the Dover Reading Chair project is due by November 30. For further information, please feel free to contact me at the number or e-mail listed below. I look forward to hearing from you!
