Yours Truly,

Mayor
Dover is the oldest continuous settlement in New Hampshire and the seventh oldest in the United States. The permanent settlement was located at Dover Point, near the confluence of the Cochecho, Bellamy and Piscataqua Rivers. For a few years Dover was an independent colony named Northam, and later Bristol. In 1692, Dover became part of the Massachussetts Bay Colony. The original township included the present towns of Dover, Durham, Lee, Madbury, Somersworth, Rollinsford, and parts of Newmarket, Newington, and Greenland.
Dover has always used its rivers to its economic advantage. The first use of the water power from the Cochecho River was in 1642, when Major Waldron built a sawmill. During the 1700s Dover boatyards constructed many small schooners and packets for the thriving shipbuilding industry. With the establishment of the Cocheco Manufacturing Company in the 1820s, the city grew to become a world leader in the manufacture of cotton goods by the 1880s. Also in the nineteenth century, brick-making flourished on our clay-laden riverbanks, as did shoe manufacturing, which developed here after the Civil War.
