Dover New Hampshire - Spend some time where it all began… New Hampshire – You’re going to love it here.

Dover 1st, First in NH, First With You! NH’s Oldest Permanent Settlement – 1623

Welcome to Dover

If you are looking for a place to spend the day or to spend the weekend, then look no further. Come to Dover, New Hampshire.

Dover can offer you a memorable and enjoyable experience. Stroll our vibrant downtown and enjoy the beautiful Cochecho River. From our one-of-a-kind antique, collectible, furniture and gift shops to the many diverse restaurants, Dover has something for everyone to enjoy throughout the year.

Dating back to 1623, Dover is the oldest permanent settlement in the State of New Hampshire. Our City offers a rich history of buildings, museums, and architecture.

I know that you will experience the warmth and hospitality of our community and return again and again. Enjoy your stay in Dover.

Yours Truly,

Scott Myers
Mayor

Dover is the oldest continuous settlement in New Hampshire and the seventh oldest in the United States. The permanent settlement was located at Dover Point, near the confluence of the Cochecho, Bellamy and Piscataqua Rivers. For a few years Dover was an independent colony named Northam, and later Bristol. In 1692, Dover became part of the Massachussetts Bay Colony. The original township included the present towns of Dover, Durham, Lee, Madbury, Somersworth, Rollinsford, and parts of Newmarket, Newington, and Greenland.

Dover has always used its rivers to its economic advantage. The first use of the water power from the Cochecho River was in 1642, when Major Waldron built a sawmill. During the 1700s Dover boatyards constructed many small schooners and packets for the thriving shipbuilding industry. With the establishment of the Cocheco Manufacturing Company in the 1820s, the city grew to become a world leader in the manufacture of cotton goods by the 1880s. Also in the nineteenth century, brick-making flourished on our clay-laden riverbanks, as did shoe manufacturing, which developed here after the Civil War.

Member of the New Hampshire Main Street Center. Dover is a NH Main Street Community.
