Snow covered winter scenes and sitting by a cozy fire are beautiful times in our lives, but remember, they can also be dangerous. Follow these safety tips and have a happy, safe and warm winter.
Keep healthy, safe and warm.
Outside tips – Wear several layers of loose fitting clothing and shield all exposed areas of your body. Do not smoke because nicotine constricts finger and toe capillaries.
When treating for frostbite, put frosted fingers in armpits. Soak hands or feet in warm water (not hot) for approximately twenty minutes.
Be careful when walking on snow and ice covered surfaces. Wear rubber-soled shoes and take short steps, planting feet firmly with knees bent. If you feel loss of balance, relax and fall limply to your side.
Don’t walk or skate on ice less than 3” thick. If the ice breaks, roll to thicker ice, or when in the water, kick like you are swimming until heavier ice is reached.
Make sure your chimney is functional and clear of obstructions. Have it checked yearly for any cracks, loose bricks, etc. A spark arrestor is a good idea. Also use smoke detectors throughout your house.
Inside tips – Keep your furnace in good repair. Have a serviceman clean and check the unit including all controls. Is there an emergency shutoff? If not, have one installed.
Store wood kindling away from fireplaces or free-standing stoves. Burn only properly aged wood to avoid heavy creosote build up. Keep a fire extinguisher (and a chimney fire extinguisher) on hand in case of an emergency.
Keep space heaters out of halls, away from doors or stairs where they may block exits or accidently be tipped over. Never fill portable heaters while burning or when they are still hot.
This pamphlet gives you Cold Weather Safety Tips which should be followed when “Old Man Winter” makes his appearance. Remember, as temperatures drop, dangers rise! Keep healthy, safe and warm.
