TUTTLE'S RED BARN, The Story of America's Oldest Family Farm is a children’s book written by Richard Michelson and illustrated by Mary Azarian. The book tells how John Tuttle arrived in Dover New Hampshire in 1632 with only an ax and two pewter candleholders to build the farm that still stands on the same land today. With twelve generations making milestones along the way, Tuttle’s is America’s oldest family-owned farm.
The book enlightens the reader how the Tuttle family fought in the Revolutionary War, protected slaves, helped pave the way for the Industrial Revolution, and even offered maple syrup to Abraham Lincoln when he visited Dover.
Caldecott medalist Mary Azarian’s illustrations are remarkable to accompany Richard Michelson’s informative account of the family that has remained connected throughout centuries through their love of a big red barn named Tuttle’s.
